Tuesday September 11

It was an up and down kind of day.  Thirty miles of (gentle) uphill followed by about 14 miles of down.  And then those last few miles of up again before reaching the booming metropolis of Mitchell OR, population 129.  Seems I wasn't the only one looking down to see if I had a flat tire for those last few uphill miles.  After the effortless sailing downhill for so long it seemed like hard work getting to the finish line!

It was another pretty ride.  Here are some shots riding up to Ochoco Summit.  Ochoco Lake is so low that some of the docks have been left stranded high and dry.

The day started out pretty cool (about 7C) and hadn't warmed up much by the top.  Time to put my jacket back on and head downhill.  The downhill was much steeper than our uphill was; glad we did the road in the direction that we did.  It was a pretty downhill ride, as we approached the "painted hills", but quite a rough road.  Between the chip seal and the temperature, my hands were pretty numb by the time I reached the bottom.

Not sure how long ago this fire was, but we could still smell it a bit as we rode by.

Finally - into Mitchell via the "business loop".

The sign says "Gateway to the Painted Hills".  The Painted Hills were 6 miles off the highway as we were coming in, so I chose not to add 12 miles to my day.  Lo and behold one of our riders befriended the local school bus driver who offered to run us out there in one of his buses.  Gotta love small towns!  As I mentioned before, the population is published as 129.  Not surprisingly we did not all fit into the Oregon Hotel.

A few folks were housed at another hotel up the hill.  Here's a shot of Main Street, one of the local shops and the grocery store outside and in.

Then we loaded up the bus

And headed for the hills.  Gorgeous!

A lovely shrimp curry followed by cherry pie for dinner.  Big-ish day tomorrow...........

Stats for the day:
75 km / 46 miles from Prineville OR to Mitchell OR
2566 feet up, 2483 feet down
Temps 7C to 18C.  A bit cooler today.  A bit of tailwind as well as a bit of a headwind (gasp!) from time to time.

Sunday September 30

We’ve had such good weather on this trip that it seems a shame to end it on a different note. Perhaps it’s a sign that it’s time to go home....
