Friday September 7

Almost 60 miles of tailwind today. Nice.....  We started out with a bit of a challenge getting out of Eugene. The first 1.5 miles were the toughest to follow directions on. Piece of cake after that. By 4 miles we were well out into the country.  For the most part today we followed the course of the McKenzie River. It was largely obscured by vegetation, but lovely views when we got them.

It was a net uphill day, but short & gentle climbs along with the odd downhill; together with the tailwind it made for a pretty easy day. At about 22 miles we got onto OR 126 for the rest of the day. It wasn’t too bad where the shoulder was good, but the shoulder was too narrow for long stretches and there were lots of transport trucks - ugh!

Lots of rural homes - both farms and nice residential properties.

The Leaburg Dam and Fish Hatchery proved to be an interesting stop. They produce over 700,000 rainbow trout each year.

I believe this was a monkeyflower plant. Don’t think I’ve seen one of those before.

Next up - the Goodpasture Historic Covered Bridge, said to be the most photographed covered bridge in Oregon.

Had to take this picture, and then talked to one of the Forestry Service people in the building behind the sign. He seemed normal enough - not a “nimrod” at all!

At about 20 miles we started to smell smoke for the first time this trip. It seems the Terwilliger Fire is just a few miles from Rainbow (our home for the night).  It’s hard to know what future smoke conditions will be like. It depends on wind and whether the fire is growing or not.

Another fabulous dinner - chicken, rice, chic peas, salad, apple crisp. Then came map meeting for tomorrow and an unusual amount of angst among the troops. Big climbing day tomorrow and it seems there are some nerves. It will be interesting to see how it unfolds. I’m pretty sure everyone will be just fine!

Stats for today:
93 km / 57 miles from Eugene OR to Rainbow OR
1606 feet up / 802 feet down
Temps 10C - 30C

Sunday September 30

We’ve had such good weather on this trip that it seems a shame to end it on a different note. Perhaps it’s a sign that it’s time to go home....
